Leaving for Oman and first days in Muscat
As already mentioned in my last post, it took us a few days to arrive at our decision to leave for Oman. We travelled a road less frequented, crossed a border less used, and hoped for a smoother journey. We were right, the road trip was uneventful, apart from the nature in Oman which is impressive. On the road, both kids fell asleep eventually, which was also good to know that they still felt safe with us being in the car and on the road to a different country.
In Muscat, more lessons learned:
If you think that once you leave the “danger zone” your fear will disappear within an instant, you might be mistaken. To be honest, I know that one quite well in theory and practice, it just takes a while for the nervous system to calm back down. Your body needs time to break down all the stress hormones that are definitely there.
More importantly: Kids are resilient.
While we are still startled by noises from airplanes, motorbikes or cars when we are outside, the kids are calmer now. They are still talking about missiles, and it is good to do so. They know we are safe where we are now.
We started to avoid talking about potential further escalations or current attacks when they are present, as I think it is not good to feed a fear which is now more abstract to them.
